What is an Rss Writer?

An rss writer is a wizard like tool that will create rss files for you to announce your latest news or updates to your website. RSS files are just text files in which headlines, summaries, links and published dates are listed (and sometimes other information, such as author and categories). Each item in the file is labelled with 'xml tags' so that the rss readers know which data is which. You don't have to worry about the xml tags - just enter your data into an rss writer and it will output the rss file in the xml format, ready to load onto your webserver.

How could I use an RSS Writer?

After familiarising yourself with RSS readers and using one for a while, you may start to get ideas of how you could use RSS for publishing. If you already have a website, you can use an RSS writer to create an RSS feed for your website, to announce whenever you publish something new. This could act as an addition to your hospital's website, for example, with each department having their own RSS feed.

If encouraged the other members of your department to install RSS readers and link to your department's RSS feed, this could be an effective way to inform everyone of all your department's latest guidelines, news and events. This would be much more effective than emails that often go unread, missing or buried under a pile of spam.

If you register your departmental feed in an online RSS directory, you could start to attract worldwide attention to your work - especially if you act as a pioneer and register your feed before everyone else has. For example, some surgeons have now started their own online blogs acting like online diaries of interesting cases, accompanied by their RSS links, which are being subscribed to by hundreds of other interested medics across the globe.

Where can I get an RSS Writer?

Our favourite feed writer is Feed Editor. You can download a trial version here. For it to be fully functional you will have to pay a license fee of $19.95. This tool is very easy to use, well organised and makes rss publishing a breeze. After creating the files it can publish automatically to your webserver. It comes with a comprehensive user manual and there is an online support forum. We think it is well worth the money.

How can I publicise my RSS feeds?

The first thing you should do is advertise the feed on your website. It most common practice to use the following xml logo, with a link to your feed: You will also see similar logos that say 'rss' instead of 'xml'.

Next you should register you feed with online rss directories. If you have a new medical feed, you can let us know and we'll add it to our MedWorm directory.
