Retake MCAT to increase chances? 8 Sep 2010
by cheechootrain (Posted Wed Sep 08, 2010 11:50 pm)trublue943 wrote:Thanks! I decided to retest but to re-focus my studying this time. My focus was more on subject matter rather than on question format. Hopefully the 2nd time is the charm haha!
Make sure that you take practice test in real "conditions" so you can get a gage on what you'll be scoring. If you're not scoring over a 30, then don't take the MCAT again. You don't want to rush it.
Try looking into MCAT prep courses such as Kaplan.
If not, here is a tip to help your studying. First, understand the material. When you take the MCAT, you need to study the pattern. There is always a pattern to a test. Get MCAT prep books that have the answer in the back, but also the wrong answers and why they are wrong. Explanation is the best key to understanding the material. Once you can understand, you'll be able to connect it. Second thing, mix it up. Study the MCAT prep book for 30-45 mins, then study some notes you've written down for 30-45 mins, then use flash cards and so on. It'll help with your critical thinking skills because it forces your mind to aggregate everything and connect all the information. You'll be able to draw answer from three different locations rather than just studying the book.
You can apply to a DO school if you don't want to wait.

Advice on What to Do If I Don't Get In 8 Sep 2010
by cheechootrain (Posted Wed Sep 08, 2010 11:45 pm)GPA looks fine. Did you apply to DO schools also? If you do, you might still have a chance of getting in. If you don't, I'd study to retake the MCAT and to get a higher score so you can average that low 20.
As long as you are doing something such as the Air Force, I think you'll be fine. You can always volunteer or do some research. Just stay active between the application cycle so you don't have to report that you just played Xbox during the time.

by AL_emt (Posted Wed Sep 08, 2010 11:15 pm)I was saying that for anyone reading, not that you aren't special of course
I personally would do a post-bac if you feel that you need to unless you have time and money to burn. The masters would look better on the application and might actually be easier to get into given your stats, however.

by orthoped (Posted Wed Sep 08, 2010 9:09 am)It also affects your post course affiliations. Since MD is preferred more so number of residencies don't really mean much if for the rest of your life you would be treated secondary to an MD.

Pharmacy Technician Careers 8 Sep 2010
by nmetc (Posted Wed Sep 08, 2010 7:17 am)Yes, i agree with you!
Career in pharmacy has always been a good career. It has its own standard. What if this kind of training would be online. It is great if we have online training for Paramedic Programs. I found a site on the google nmetc.com, that provides exceptional training and education in pre-hospital emergency medicine. It is quiet good.

Health insurance is important 8 Sep 2010
by studenthealth (Posted Wed Sep 08, 2010 5:31 am)Having health insurance is important because coverage helps people get timely medical care and improves their lives and health. Some may believe that people always have access to medical care because they can always go to an emergency room. But even areas with well supported safety-net care do not remove barriers to access to the same extent as does having health insurance.
Thanks

Microelectrodes help brain signals 'speak' 7 Sep 2010
by dingding18 (Posted Tue Sep 07, 2010 11:33 pm)Microelectrodes help brain signals 'speak'

While still in its infancy and primitive, even crude, two grids of 16 microelectrodes implanted atop the brain of a volunteer
with severe epileptic seizures are somewhat successfully decoding brain signals into a small set of words, thanks to work out
of the University of Utah.
The volunteer, who was already having part of his skull temporarily removed so doctors could implant larger
FF14 Power leveling electrodes (see button-like numbers in
photo) to locate the source of his seizures, agreed to also have these two grids of tiny electrodes implanted over the speech
centers of his brain.
The microelectrode grids are at the end of the green and orange wire bundles, and, too small to be seen, are represented by
two sets of 16 white dots.
(Credit: University of Utah Department of Neurosurgery)
His brain signals were then recorded as he repeatedly read 10 words out loud: yes, no, hungry, thirsty, more, less, hot,
cold, hello, goodbye.
When the researchers compared two brain signal patterns, i.e. those generated as he said "yes" and "no," they could
distinguish between the two correctly up to 90 percent of the time. But when ffxiv powerleveling
examining all 10 patterns, they only picked out the correct word 28 to 48 percent of the time. While better than chance (1 in
10), the results proved that much work remains.
"This is proof of concept," says Bradley Greger, an assistant professor of bioengineering, in a news release. "We've proven
these signals can tell you what the person is saying well above chance, but we need to be able to do more words with more
accuracy before it is something a patient really might find useful."
The study, published in the October issue of the Journal of Neural Engineering, involved a new kind of nonpenetrating
microelectrode that is placed on top of specific sites of the brain. Called microECoGs, they are essentially a small version
of the electrodes used for electrocorticography.
The researchers say that EEG electrodes used to record brain waves are too big and record too many signals to decode speech
signals, while the nonpenetrating microelectrodes are both smaller and safer.
In this study, each of two grids were spaced a millimeter apart over one of two speech areas of the brain: the facial motor
cortex, which controls movements of the mouth, lips, tongue and face, and Wernicke's area, which is tied to language
comprehension.
During one-hour sessions over four consecutive days, each word was repeated from 31 to 96 times, depending
Final Fantasy XIV Power leveling on how long the patient was
able to proceed. The researchers simply analyzed brain signal patterns between each speaking of each word, and using those
patterns tried to identify words based on signals.
The most important takeaway may be that this is possible at all, that closely space microelectrodes can actually capture
signals important to speech from single, column-shaped processing units of neurons in the human brain.
Whether brain signal patterns vary widely from one person to another may be unlikely but still remains to be seen, and could
prove problematic if a patient is never able to speak and whose words are therefore never able to be, essentially, decoded.
For now, the team is focusing on bigger grids that can capture more data.
"It means it works, and we now need to refine it so that people with locked-in syndrome could really communicate," Gregor
says. "The obvious next step--and this is what we are doing right now--is to do it with bigger microelectrode grids. We can
make the grid bigger, have more electrodes, and get a tremendous amount of data out of the brain, which probably means more
words and better accuracy."
