The Basics of GERD 18 Aug 2010
GERD occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) does not close properly and stomach contents reflux back up into the esophagus.
Heartburn and acid regurgitation are the main symptoms of GERD, though some people with GERD don't experience any heartburn episodes. This is why it's important to know all the possible symptoms of GERD.
While the majority of doctors will prescribe a trial of acid-suppressive therapy, and make a diagnosis based on the patient's response to this, there are tests to diagnose GERD a doctor may want to have performed.
Treatment for GERD will usually start with certain lifestyle modifications and dietary changes. If you continue to have symptoms after these modifications, your physician will discuss with you the use of antacids, H2 blockers, and Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs). If your physician and you decide a surgical option is needed, the most common surgical treatment for GERD is the fundoplications surgery. Another procedure sometimes used in the treatment of GERD is the radiofrequency treatment.
When were you diagnosed with GERD? Please take a moment to answer in the poll below. If you would like to share your story on what symptoms led to your GERD diagnosis, you can do so here.

Heartburn-Free School Lunches 13 Aug 2010
Starting a new school year is an adjustment for everyone. Children exchange summer clothes for school clothes and books. Adults adjust to again the kids being away for hours each day. For parents of children with a medical condition, there may be even more adjustments to make. This includes children who suffer from chronic acid reflux.
School lunches prepared by a school can often be higher in fat, which can be a heartburn trigger for those children and teens who suffer from chronic heartburn or GERD. The best option, therefore, may be for kids to take home prepared lunches to school.
Heartburn-free school lunches are easy to plan and prepare.

Do Family and Friends Support You? 11 Aug 2010
If you live with GERD, you may have had to make some changes in the foods you eat. Perhaps you have explained your dietary changes to your family and friends. How have they reacted? Have they tried to support you and include some of your heartburn-safe foods when you dine with them, or have you had to bring your own foods to eat?
Have you explained to your family and friends how the dietary changes and lifestyle modifications you've made are important as you continue to live with GERD? Have they understood and tried to help in any way they can, or have they just "not gotten it" and don't understand at all?
Share your experiences about how others have tried to help you, or were no help at all.
