The Best Free RSS Aggregator
We chose FeedReader for the following qualities: easy of use; speed; style of interface (explorer tree of categories on left, lists of headlines top right and fuller summaries bottom right - we found this layout to be the most effective in getting to the information you require the fastest); lightweight (small amount of memory required to install); no unnecessary features; no obvious critical errors (bugs in code) that would stop the application from functioning.
All the other RSS Readers that we reviewed were ruled out due to either the wrong style of interface to get through lots of information fast, poor performance, critical errors in code or over complicated unnecessary features.
FeedReader was not perfect- it was rather limited in its ability to filter and file records for later use, but we felt that it was the best free reader currently available to start out with and an excellant tool to familiarise yourself with RSS. The program is 'open source software', which means anyone can have access to the source code and it is under constant development, which means that the progam will evolve with each new release, so it is likely that the filtering functionality will be enhaced in the future.
Flags clearly identify which RSS feeds you have read and which are new. You can also easily change the time period for which new RSS files should be listed and you can export all your feeds to be imported into a different aggregator, should you decide to change over to a different product or online service.
